Pony Racing Rallies, 'This is a marvellous opportunity for budding Jockeys to have a go'

Point-to-Point Pony Racing jockeys

Pony Racing 6th January 2016

The Melton Hunt Club Point-to-Point is planning to run a novice race next May for ponies and riders that have not been placed 1st or 2nd in any pony race and have not competed in any race course race. There is no jumping in pony races ! If there are enough entries there will be a 138cm and under, and a 148 cm and under race.

We want to encourage genuine hunting ponies and riders who would just like to try riding in a race. To do this riders and ponies need to have either hunted or attended hunt rides four times together or attended 4 rallies together.

We would like to tell you about this now so you can plan for your winter activities and we will be running some mounted rallies at Chris Bealby’s yard at Barrowby near Grantham on the following provisional dates:

Tuesday 29th March Easter Tuesday

Tuesday 5th April – Tuesday before Grand National

Friday 15th April- tea time night before Belton HT

The rallies would be a super chance for the children to learn all about pony racing and hopefully encourage them to take part in the future. The rallies could be part of the 4 required, but they are not compulsory and you do not need to attend them all.

Children will have to register with the PPA ( for insurance purposes). Ponies need to be up to date with their vaccinations, passports and will need a height certificate if close to the height. Riders need to be 9 – 15 years old and ponies up to 148cm and 5 – 20 years old. More details of the regulations can be found on the Pony Racing Authority web site, but there is a lot of reading!

You do not have to have racing saddles or wear racing boots to take part pony races !!!! You just need to have safe equipment.

The Melton Hunt Club Point-to-Point is on Sunday 8th May at Garthorpe racecourse in Leics.

We hope that you will enter this race and support us.

If you are interested please email frankiefletcher@btinternet.com so that we can gauge the amount of support for this event and I can send you rally booking forms.

The Pytchley ( Sunday 10th April )and Fernie ( Sunday 1st May )are also running Pony races for ponies and riders that have not been placed 1st -4th in any pony race.
