The final point-to-point of the Midlands Area season took place at Dingley racecourse, just outside Market Harborough in Leicestershire, on Saturday 13th May and produced doubles for jockey Jack Andrews and trainer Tom Ellis. Dale Peters trains and rides Thunderstruck, who made it two wins from the last three outings as he won the first […]
Belvoir at Garthorpe 2016 - Preview
The second of Garthorpe's fixtures is the Belvoir meeting, this Saturday 19th March, with the first race starting at 12.30pm. There are 120 horses entered so visitors are promised a good day's racing from what is likely to be a seven-race card.
All the bends have been moved to fresh ground, and the fences where applicable. The advanced going on Sunday was heavy. We are forecasted a dry week and will be posting regular going updates as we receive them from the Clerk of the Course.
Saturday's first race is the PPORA Club Members Race for Novice Riders, with 24 horses entered in a strong field. Top rated horse in this race is Numbercruncher, which won its last two runs at Tabley last season. Dale Peters saddles Done A Runner (Jack Andrews) which won as recently as last weekend. They line up against Lough Inch and Rory Bevin, something of a Garthorpe specialist, who will be looking to make amends after a mistake last time out at the Cottesmore meeting at the same course. Shantou Prince, from Gill Walford's yard is another talented horse, with four wins from five starts. Arkose won last time out, at Dingley last season, and 6-year-old Arthur's Secret won at Thorpe Lodge in February, but is also entered elsewhere. Hunters Lodge is also entered at two meetings on Sunday and is likely to go to Penshurst.
Tommy Morgan's local yard has two excellent horses entered into the second race, The Garthorpe Hunts Club Members race. Both Tulsa and Agent For Chaos have been impressive so far this season and are entered for this and the Connolly's Red Mills Intermediate race, the third on this card. Whichever of these runs looks to be the likely favourite, with The King of Angels another who could be in the frame.
The Connolly's Red Mills Intermediate attracts 16 entries, including the two previously mentioned horses from the Morgan yard. The first four finishers will all qualify for the Intermediate Final at Cheltenham on the 17th April. Other good prospects include Zuccotti Park which won a fortnight ago at Godstone, as did Minerfortyniner. Master Sunrise has not run for over a year but could feature, as could Exclusive Rights, the mount of in-form Claire Hart.
The entries for the Mixed Open make for familiar reading with a lot of regular visitors in the field. Mr Madeit returns after his impressive victory here at the Cottesmore meeting but Panama Canal, Palypso de Creek and Qoubilai all won last time out too. Vincitore and Popaway are also entered and could compete with these too.
The Restricted race also features some familiar faces who ran at the last Garthorpe meeting three weeks ago. Samarnni won her Maiden impressively under Gina Andrews on that occasion and now moves up a level. Our Milly Acres would be a popular local winner for Belvoir subscribers John and Doone Chatfeild-Roberts, who also have Curnalee Coleen entered in the same race. Alex Vaughan-Jones rides Ignite A Light from Gerald Bailey's yard and Rory Bevin has For A Change. A hard one to pick.
The sixth race is the Thoroughbred Breeders Association Club Members Race for Mares and Fillies and could feature two horses also entered in previous races, Popaway and Our Milly Acres. The Connors/Chatfeild-Roberts team also have She's Real in this one so Our Milly Acres may run in the Restricted. Kimora and Watney's Way could also feature.
The card finishes with the Open Maiden which has 25 entries, so could, theoretically, be split. Minellaforlunch, Fizzlestix and True Gold are all looking to go one better than last time out. Teeton Kato is one to watch in this one.
The Belvoir meeting has attracted an impressive range of trade stands and there will be a fully tented and licensed bar on site, bookmakers and the Tote.
